A New Technology to Clean Up Polluted Seas in Three Weeks

The presentation of the Minerv bio-recovery took place on the occasion of World Environment Day, Minerv bio-recovery is a biodegradable solution based on micro-powders able to multiply the “plastic-eating” bacteria to the point that they can also attack the crude oils on seas.

A new technology, based on the revolutionary 100% biodegradable bioplastic, able to clean up naturally polluted sea sections. The “Minerv bio-recovery” technology developed by the Italian company Bio-on and tested through research carried out in collaboration with the Institute for the coastal marine environment (IAMC) of the National Research Council of Messina. A useful tool not only in case of disastrous events but also in the daily maintenance of the seabed of ports and industrial sites.

The action of micro-powders This aid appears as a significant discovery in the field of the so-called”oil-bioremediation that is the activity that aims to counteract the negative impact on the environment of spills of molecules and polluting products, such as hydrocarbons, thanks to the metabolic action of microorganisms. In particular, Minerv bio-recovery is based on the use of micro-powders, of the size of a few microns and specific shape, made with the Phas Bio-on bioplastic, natural, and 100% biodegradable.

The intensification of a natural process: The particles of these micro-powders, once thrown into a polluted stretch of sea, give life to a porous structure that is the ideal context to host bacteria that feed on bioplastics and that multiply and strengthen up to attack the Petroleum. “These microorganisms – explains Simone Cappello, head of the Bioremediation project at the Iamc, in Messina – are already present in the marine environment but in metabolic, physiological conditions and in quantities that are not sufficient to allow a substantial reduction of spilled hydrocarbons. The Phas bioplastic that can instead favor and accelerate the process “. All this allows not only to obtain results in a short time (the biodegradative processes are activated in fact in about 5 days and the degradable hydrocarbon fraction, such as oil, is eliminated in about 20 days), but to do so in an ecological way how, as Cappello added, the use of this bioplastic “is safe for the environment and marine fauna because it leaves no trace”.

Advanced experimentation: This innovative technology was presented on June 5 in Bologna, in conjunction with World Environment Day, as part of the G7 Ambiente hosted in the Emilian city. In the coming weeks, further tests will begin in the seas around the world, in ports, in industrial sites such as refineries and the tanks of the most massive oil tankers. “We are proud to contribute to protecting the marine environment,” said Marco Astorri, President and CEO of Bio-on.
